With the Holidays upon us and many of us wrapping up our work weeks in anticipation of Thanksgiving celebrations, it’s important to think about how we leave our work spaces for the extra-long weekend. Do a little visualization exercise with me. Imagine yourself on Monday returning to your desk looking the exact same way it does right now. How does that make you feel? Will you be able to start your day with a fresh outlook and know exactly what your top priorities are? Or is your desk a mess of papers, multiple to-do lists and a few empty coffee cups like mine is? Yep! Even professional organizers get disorganized sometimes! The key is to get things back in order to set ourselves up for success when we are ready to return to our work space. Here are some easy steps to follow:

  1. Throw away anything you no longer need. That includes empty coffee cups.
  2. File away anything you’re done with.
  3. Make a spot for projects in progress.
  4. Prep yourself for action once you return. The way I accomplish this best is to make a bullet point list of my top five priorities for the next time I return to my work space on a post-it note and place it on or right in front of my keyboard. That way I simply can’t overlook it and I’m able to start my day right on track with where I need to be.

So before you disconnect from work to enjoy family time today, take a few extra minutes to tidy up your work space. You’ll thank yourself on Monday.
